I have recently been making a lot of finished type and photo compositions. I always start off by hand, sketching with pencil, and eventually going to micron pens or marker. I then take these sketches and bring them into illustrator to refine them, and ultimately to make finished compositions.
At KU, we had a hand lettering class taught by Amber Goodvin, from Hallmark. It was a great beginning for me to what has bloomed into a huge love for hand lettering and typography. I was always madly interested in type, I just hadn't bridged over into the hand lettering side nearly as much. Here are a few sketches and marks that we created throughout the class.
Ophelia is a display typeface inspired by a sample of a friend's handwriting and visual direction. I started off drawing by hand, than finishing the font in font lab.
